Just as his successor John Paul I had adopted his name in honor of the two pontiffs who preceded him, John XXIII and Paul VI, Cardinal Wojtyla wanted to do the same to pay homage to his predecessors and join their mission to fulfill the directives of the Second Vatican Council. Born on May 18, 1920, in the Polish city of Wadowice, his election to the Throne of St. Peter came as a surprise to the whole world and despair to Soviet leaders. The surprise was due to the fact that John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope since Adrian VI (1522-1523), and despair because he had come from a Poland that had suffered for decades from the oppression of the communist regime. In fact, St. John Paul II was tireless in the anti-communist fight: in his home country, in 1989, until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the end of communism had a fundamental contribution from our Holy Pope.\r\n\r\nWith the third longest papacy in history, St. John Paul II reformed the Code of Canon Law; edited the New Vulgate; developed the Theology of the Body; published the official Catechism of the Catholic Church; instituted World Youth Day; wrote numerous encyclicals, such as Fides et Ratio and Veritatis Splendor; among many other important actions for the Church. St. John Paul II's pontificate was marked by his great love for the Eucharist and his deep devotion to Our Lady, which even appears on his coat of arms bearing the motto Totus Tuus. His devotion to the Blessed Virgin can also be seen after the attack he suffered on May 13, 1981. Pope John Paul II was shot while greeting the crowds in St. Peter's Square by the Turk Ali Agca and attributed his salvation to the Virgin of Fatima. The following year, he visited Fatima and placed the bullet from the shooting in the crown of Our Lady's image. Ecclesia de Eucaristia, his famous encyclical which takes up the liturgical-spiritual teaching of the Second Vatican Council, recalls the fundamental elements of the teaching on the Eucharist.\r\n\r\nThe pontiff's travels were a landmark of his papacy: John Paul II made history as the pope who traveled the most: in total there were 104 international trips and 146 in Italy, with 129 countries visited on five continents. One characteristic of his trips was the kiss he gave the ground when he arrived. Over the years, the Pontiff's attention turned to the celebration of the Holy Jubilee Year 2000. This event took on a highly symbolic meaning in the context of his pastoral mission and had a strong penitential importance. The closing of the Jubilee ushered in the final phase of his pontificate, which was marked especially by the progressive deterioration of the Pope's health, who after a long and distressing agony died on the evening of April 2, 2005. His death caused worldwide commotion and brought thousands of people to Rome to bid farewell to the great pope.\r\n\r\nThe final Mass of the papal funeral brought together heads of state and dignitaries, including leaders of hostile nations. With great appeal for his immediate canonization, Pope Benedict XVI granted the dispensation from the five years of waiting prescribed for the beginning of the cause of canonization and proclaimed him Blessed on May 1, 2011. On April 27, 2014, Pope John Paul II was canonized by Pope Francis. On October 22, we celebrate the liturgical memory of Saint John Paul II, a saint of our time who lived holiness in a concrete way during his life. The three fishermen – Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso, and João Alves – had had no luck that morning; they had been fishing for hours without catching anything. They had almost given up, when João Alves decided to give it one more try. He cast his net into the river and slowly began to draw it in. There was something there, but it wasn’t a fish… it seemed to be a piece of wood. When they pulled it out of the net, they saw that it was a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the head missing.\r\nJoão cast his net into the waters once more, and pulling it in, he found another piece of wood which proved to be the statue’s head. As if in response to strange instinct, he cast his net a third time into the river. When he tried to pull it in, he found it was full of fish. Now his companions cast their nets as well, and likewise found themselves overwhelmed with an abundance of fish.\r\nOver the course of the next few days, the three fishermen cleaned and re-assembled the statue, and Filipe Pedroso placed it in his humble abode. \r\n \r\n\r\nWitness of Jesus among the sick, the young, and athletes\r\n\r\nCaring for Aids sufferers; providing assistance and medical service; and evangelisation work offered to the poor and marginalised in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro characterised the youthful years of Guido Vidal França Schäffer, a young doctor born in 1974, who in the 1990s, together with his then-girlfriend and a priest, started the prayer group Fogo do Espírito Santo in the parish.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nLater, after participating in the 1997 family gathering on the occasion of the visit of St. John Paul II to Rio de Janeiro, and in 2000 during a trip to Europe at the beatification of the Brazilian protomartyrs, he decided to enter the seminary.\r\n\r\nAt the same time as his studies, Guido enthusiastically devoted himself to evangelisation and medical practice. The Feast of Mercy is celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter, that is on the Second Sunday of Easter, which is called the Divine Mercy Sunday today. Cardinal Franciszek Macharski was the first one to make it part of the liturgical calendar of the Archdiocese of Cracow (1985) and, later, some Polish bishops instituted the feast in their dioceses. In 1995, at the request of the Polish Episcopal Conference, Holy Father John Paul II instituted the feast in all dioceses in Poland. On the day of Sister Faustina’s canonization, 30th April 2000, the Pope instituted the feast for the whole Church.

\r\nThe institution of the feast was inspired by a desire of Jesus which was conveyed by Sister Faustina. The Lord Jesus told her: “I want the first Sunday after Easter to be the Feast of Mercy” (Diary 299). “I want the Feast of Mercy to be a refuge and sanctuary for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the depths of My mercy are open; I pour out a whole sea of graces on souls that approach the fount of My mercy. Any soul that makes its Confession and receives Holy Communion will have its sins and its punishment completely remitted. On that day are open all the Divine floodgates through which graces flow” (Diary 699). In many revelations the Lord Jesus did not only define the place of the feast in the liturgical calendar of the Church but also the reason for its institution, the way it should be prepared, celebrated, and He also spoke about the great promises. The greatest of them is the grace of „complete forgiveness of sins and punishment”. It is connected with Holy Communion received on that day, following a good Confession (without any attachment to the smallest sin), in the spirit of the devotion to the Divine Mercy, that is, trusting God and loving neighbour actively. As the Rev. Professor Ignacy Różycki says, it is a grace greater than plenary indulgence. „Plenary indulgence is only a remission of temporal punishment for the sins committed, however, it is never a remission of the sins themselves. Basically, the most special grace is greater than the graces of the 6 sacraments, apart from the sacrament of baptism, since only the sacramental grace of the holy baptism is the forgiveness of all sins and punishment. However, as far as these promises are concerned, Christ associated the remission of sins and punishment with Holy Communion received during the Feast of Mercy, therefore, as regards this, He raised it to the rank of the 'second baptism’.” In preparation for this feast we are to recite the novena which consists in saying the Chaplet to the Divine Mercy for 9 days. The novena begins on Good Friday.
